Trainer Performance Monitoring & Assessment FAQs
The IITT's Trainer Performance Monitoring & Assessment service is a collection of processes, associated guides and records, designed for Training Managers and trainers. It provides a framework for the objective assessment of a trainer's delivery performance and associated signposting of developmental activity.
The Competencies and Behaviours Framework, or standards, which form the governance for this service, are aligned to best practice in training pedagogy. These competencies and behaviours are mapped to the Professional Standards for Trainers, Tutors and Teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector. They contribute to assessment for the PTLLS qualification which is accepted on the Qualifications & Credit Framework and for IITT Professional membership.
Listed below are some answers to questions you may have on the TPMA service. We shall continue to add to this list as we receive more questions. If you cannot find the answer to your question, the membership team will be pleased to help you.
Q. My trainers are already TAP certified - why would they want this as well?
A. There are two main benefits to the TPMA service: 1) You can have all of your trainers assessed and monitored on a regular basis - so you can maintain control of the performance of all your trainers across the organisation. Note that you can also Licence the ability to carry out your own assessments in-house. 2) As your trainers have been through a train the trainer programme, undertaking the TPMA live assessment will provide them with a key piece of evidence in planning and delivering a microteach session that can contribute to moving forward and gaining the nationally recognised PTLLS qualification which is based on the Professional Standards for Trainers, Tutors and Teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector and accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Note that to achieve this qualification you will need to attend a PTLLS course (which the IITT can offer as an authorised City & Guilds Centre).
Q. How often would I need to assess my trainers?
A. It depends on your requirements. The IITT recommendation is to assess your trainers on an annual basis but you can decide when - and how often - to assess them. For membership purposes you will need to have them assessed at least once every 3 years.
Q. What happens if a trainer fails the assessment?
A. Your assessor will provide a Key Performance Indicators report outlining the area(s) where the trainer needs improvement. The trainer simply needs to develop this area and retake the assessment.
Q. What is involved in the annual AQACs/AACs audit?
A. Your IITT consultant will need to visit to check the processes and requirements for a national qualification which is required by the awarding body. You will receive a full list of what the IITT consultant will be requiring when you sign up.
Q. Can I choose the training topic for the Assessment?
A. Yes, the content that the trainer uses is immaterial.
Q. Does the TPMA service affect my IITT Accreditation in any way?
A. Not at all.
Q. How do I register for the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) award?
A. This Award is offered through the Institute of IT Training acting as an Authorised Qualification Centre of City and Guilds. The Institute of IT Training provides suitably qualified Tutors and Assessors, and Internal Verification for the award in line with City and Guilds requirements and best practice. Registration for the award is through the Institute of IT Training. Certification on successful completion of the course will be made by City and Guilds.
